The holiday season is here, which only means one thing: friends, family, holiday parties and photos. Lots and lots of photos. Luckily, to keep your smile perfect, we’ve put together a list of our top ten tips:
We get it. The holidays are all about treating yourself. It’s been a long year; you’ve earned it. You want all the sweets. The candy canes, the puddings, the pies, the mountains and mountains of chocolates bought half price at the supermarket. We’re not saying you haven’t earned it; we’re just saying you don’t want to break your teeth on them. To protect your teeth, don’t chew on hard candies. We know it’s tempting to crunch down on them, but simply sucking on the lollies will prevent you from chipping your teeth. Most importantly, though, brush your teeth after eating sugary foods.
There’s lots to celebrate around the holiday season, and often we like to celebrate with a cocktail or two. And, if you’re a social smoker, you would know that after one or two beers at a party, you’re itching for a cigarette. Both alcohol and smoking can lead to dry mouth, which increases the risk of gum disease. We know it’s hard not to have fun with family and friends during the holiday season, but try not to drink or smoke excessively to protect your gums and teeth.
Long gone are the days where we used stones to make fire and teeth as tools. Although we agree that our teeth are incredibly useful, using them for just about everything will put them at risk. So, if you’re hoping to have a bright, unchipped smile for the holiday season, use a pair of scissors to cut open packages or cut the ribbons and tape. Instead, just use your teeth for what they’re meant for: eating the delicious holiday feast you’ve been looking forward to all year and fake smiling when your mum gifts you a pair of slippers for the third year in a row.
What is Christmas without a glass of mulled wine? Or a bottle or two of your favourite red wine as you dig into the dinner you’ve been slaving over. The downside of red wine is it stains. It stains carpets, shirts, your favourite comforter and teeth. Be mindful of this and try to consume red wine with food to lessen the red wine stains on your teeth
This one’s simple. Remember to brush twice a day. If you can’t, chew sugar-free gum. It’s easy to get swept up in our busy social schedules, but try not to let it take over our routine and build bad habits.
Water is that miracle cure. It generally appears on health ‘top tip’ lists like this one. And for a good reason. Drinking water washes away any food residues that might stick to your teeth. So this holiday season, drink up!
With time off work and school, it’s tempting to be a couch potato for two weeks. We want to relax and do nothing. However, let’s be honest, this often leads to boredom. And, we all know where boredom can lead to. The kitchen fridge or the pantry…over and over again. Too much free time often leads to overindulging in sweets. So, take this time to relax whilst doing something fun!
The holiday season is the season for all the dishes you’ve been dreaming about all year. It’s easy to get over-excited about all the food you’ve been drooling over. Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, Christmas cookies, and so much more. However, try to balance out your Christmas treats with other foods that will help absorb all the sugar.
We know that the Christmas season is the busiest season of all. We all have approximately 8.5 parties to attend in two weeks. However, try to keep your diet as clean as possible by eating well when you’re not celebrating.
If you want that perfect, gleaming smile in all your photos, we recommend booking an appointment today. Teeth cleaning and dental check-ups should occur once every 6 months. So, if you’re due for a visit, don’t forget to book an appointment with the dentist this December.
Enjoy this holiday season with your family and friends. We hope you spend a lot of it smiling and laughing. Happy holidays to our valuable patients!
