With a quarter of the population over 65 needing dentures, it’s safe to say that tooth loss is a common occurrence. If some or all of your teeth have been lost, can’t be restored, or need to be extracted, you might be in the same boat.
The good news is that at Maidstone Dental we can help you bring your smile back!
Dentures are an oral restoration solution for anyone with several missing or decayed teeth. Often made from acrylic, resin, nylon, metal or porcelain, they’re a removable oral appliance that sits firmly on your upper or lower jaw.
Full dentures replace an entire row of missing teeth. They often rest on top of your gums and rely on the roof of your mouth or lower jawbone for support. You might also need to utilise denture glue to keep them in place.
If you’re missing several teeth on one or both jaws, partial dentures might be the best solution for you. Similar to full dentures, they rely on your gums and bone structure for support. However, they are more stable than full dentures as they can hook around your natural teeth.
We can’t fit dentures on unhealed gums. As a result, you can opt for immediate dentures as a temporary fix after teeth extractions.
Implant-retained dentures attach to dental implants for more stability. Like traditional dentures, they are removable and should be removed every night for cleaning.
Implant-supported dentures are a more permanent solution and are non-removable dentures completely secured to dental implants.
Gaps in our teeth can result in infections, bacterial growth, decay, and further tooth loss. Restoring our smile with dentures, bridges and implants removes such risks and helps us maintain our oral and overall health.
Moreover, losing several or all of your teeth can cause your face to collapse and your mouth to sink in, resulting in early aging. Restoring your teeth with dentures can bring years back to your appearance and give you a brand-new smile. Most importantly, dentures can restore function to your teeth and mouth to give you back your quality of life. Those who opt for dentures often report improved chewing and speech functions. With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last up to a decade without issue.
Looking for an alternative to dentures?
When you come in for your consultation, our friendly dentists will take an X-ray of your mouth to determine whether you’re eligible for dentures. If you require any teeth extracted, they will need to be fully removed, and the gums will need to be fully healed before the first fitting.
Once we’ve determined that you’re eligible for dentures, we’ll take impressions of your upper and lower jaws to make a dental mould and create the denture. This process could take some time as a technician off-site creates them.
Finally, you’re ready to get your dentures fitted. Typically, dentures require at least three visits to ensure they are correctly fitted. This is because it can take some time for the soft tissues in your mouth to adjust to the denture. It’s important that you let us know if you experience discomfort with your dentures in between appointments to ensure that the fit is right.
If you notice any changes in how your denture fits after the final fitting, call us to book an appointment for a denture reline.
If you properly take care of your dentures, they can last a decade before needing replacement. When you get your dentures fitted, we always inform you of the best way to take care of your dentures. However, in general, to ensure they remain in good condition, you should:
