Why we shouldn’t avoid the dentist.

We all know that going to the dentist is vital to staying healthy. The health of your teeth and gums can affect both your quality of life and overall health. There can be consequences when we don’t pay enough attention to our teeth and gums. These consequences include bad breath, tooth decay and tooth loss. Not only can these symptoms have physical effects – such as pain, and difficulty eating and speaking- but it often damages an individual’s confidence. As a result, those with obvious dental issues – such as tooth loss – can often feel embarrassed, shy or withdrawn. The overall impact of this can be depression and isolation. Moreover, and more importantly, oral diseases have been linked with other health issues such as lung conditions, oral cancers, diabetes, strokes, adverse pregnancy outcomes and cardiovascular disease.

Dental visits are even more critical if you’re following a dental plan. Dental plans, no matter how annoying, are created in an attempt to prevent or curb any current and foreseen dental issues. When patients don’t follow them it can lead to more adverse consequences. These include:

1.   Preventable issues becoming more significant problems

What initially began as an issue requiring basic habit changes can lead to costly and painful dental procedures. It’s important that these problems are caught early on.

2.    Anxiety

People who never visit the dentist can develop dental anxiety. This is because they’re unsure of the health of their teeth and gums and are worried about costly procedures, potential pain and even disappointment. Visiting the clinic can give you peace of mind and allow our health care professionals to check on the health of your teeth.

3. It becomes expensive

Some people are worried about the cost of check-ups, particularly if they don’t have insurance. But a twice-yearly check-up – with a small fee – can save you thousands in the long run. Unfortunately, dental procedures have been known to skyrocket into the tens of thousands. However, at Maidstone Dental we have payment plans and make procedures as affordable as possible.

No matter how good your oral hygiene is, it’s not a substitute for visiting the dentist. Our oral health professionals are trained and armed with years of knowledge and experience to guide and educate you.

What happens at a check-up:

Early detection

The twice-yearly check-ups are designed to monitor your oral health. They allow us to catch problems early and treat them before it’s too late. We check for cavities, decay, broken restorations, gum disease, tartar, changes in your oral tissue and any oral changes in the head and neck. We also examine your throat, tongue, face and lymph nodes for signs of oral infection that could indicate more severe problems.

Teeth cleaning

We give you a professional clean and remove any stubborn plaque or stains.

Education

Check-ups allow us to monitor your oral hygiene and give you tips and tricks on maintaining oral health.

Prevent bad breath

We can educate you on how to manage your bad breath and indicate why it’s there in the first place.

Transform your smile

When you come to see us, we can give you dental plans or give you a solution to having a bright and beautiful smile.

If you can’t remember the last time you saw the dentist, you’re probably due for an appointment. The longer the time between appointments, the greater the risk to the overall health of your teeth and gums. Make visiting the dentist a habit. Book your appointment as you leave the clinic so you never miss your twice-yearly check-up.
