Take-Home vs In-Chair Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening is becoming more and more common and accessible, with patients able to choose between in-chair vs take-home treatments. There are pros and cons to both; you can book in a consultation with us to discuss your specific needs, but before that, read a bit more about your different options below.

In-Chair Whitening

In-chair teeth whitening is a non-invasive, simple procedure that uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to whiten your dull and stained teeth. As the treatment is being administered by a dentist, we are able to use a stronger formula with more active ingredients to achieve a more effective result, and in a much quicker time frame than take-home whitening. It is also more effective against deep stains. The costs are higher than take-home treatments, which is one thing you may need to consider. There is also a chance of your teeth becoming sensitive due to the stronger formula, so if you already have sensitive teeth you may prefer the take-home treatment.

Take-Home Whitening

Take-home teeth whitening is a more cost-effective solution than in-chair, however it will take longer to achieve a good result. The take-home treatment’s effectiveness depends on the user following the instructions correctly, which often means using it every day for two-four weeks; so it does require discipline and time management on the user’s behalf. If you have a busy or hectic schedule it would probably be more straightforward to use the in-chair treatment. We also would recommend the in-chair method if you have deeper stains on your teeth. That being said, when used correctly a good result will be achieved – it may also be preferable to those with more sensitive teeth, as less active ingredients are used in the formula.

You may decide to combine methods to achieve a long-term result; for example by having an initial in-chair treatment and then following it up with take-home top-ups.
