Guide to Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies can be unpredictable. They often arise at the most inconvenient times and, with them, bring a lot of stress and trauma. At Maidstone Dental, we’ll help you find out what dental emergencies are, how we can help and how to prevent any emergencies that may come.

What’s a dental emergency?

In short, dental emergencies are any dental issue that requires immediate professional attention to address. Some common emergencies include severe pain, uncontrollable bleeding from the mouth, unexpected tooth loss, or wobbly teeth, infections and swelling in the gum, cheek or face and mouth ulcers that haven’t healed in two weeks.

It’s best to get dental emergencies checked out as soon as possible. Yet, for various reasons some people choose to ignore these problems. However, when left unchecked, not only can these symptoms or problems cause complete discomfort, but they can lead to even worse problems.

Chipped teeth, missing crowns and fillings aren’t considered dental emergencies unless they cause you agonising pain. However, this shouldn’t stop you from booking an appointment to address such issues. Our oral health is often crucial to both our mental health and physical health. When a problem arises, it’s important we tackle them.

How does Maidstone Dental help?

When a dental emergency arises, waiting too long for an appointment can feel like waiting for eternity. At Maidstone Dental, we’re sympathetic of these situations and we’ll do our best to help you navigate them.

When facing a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is calmly book an appointment with us. You can book online or give us a call at 9317 5636. We will always try our best to ensure the wait for your appointment is as short as possible. If you find that our online booking system is full, just give us a call – we’ll make time for you.

At Maidstone Dental, we understand that there are many reasons why people avoid the dentist – even in an emergency. Two of the main reasons are the cost of procedures and dental phobias.

Firstly, dental procedures can be costly, especially if they’re an emergency procedure. We don’t want this factor to prevent you from seeking help. As a result, we will always do our best to make any and every procedure as cost effective as possible. When you come in – even for an emergency procedure – we will always tell you the costs upfront. We will also discuss your options – giving you the most effective solution, the one that you’re the most comfortable with. Additionally, we can also discuss payment plan options if required. At the end of the day, your oral health is our priority and we will do what we can to ensure that you are not on pain.

Finally, we understand that visiting the dentist is unpleasant for many. Our highly trained staff are empathetic and will do their best to make sure you feel comfortable. We do our best to remove any fear by explaining the entire procedure and making sure that you are aware, every step of the way. Moreover, feel free to bring earphones to listen to music or drown out any noise during the procedure.

How to prevent dental emergencies?

Sometimes dental emergencies are just a freak accident, however, most times they are preventable.

Follow these tips to minimise the risk:

  • Floss
  • Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time
  • Use mouthwash or drink water to remove any particles after eating
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit sugary foods and drinks
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months
  • Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleaning
