Fissure sealants are a thin plastic coating that is applied to the grooves of the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from tooth decay.
Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on these surfaces. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs
and food particles out of these grooves.
When children are young and are just learning to brush their teeth, they can quite often miss these areas at the back of their mouth as they are
difficult to reach. By preventing food and germs in these areas, it is avoiding the problem of early tooth decay and dental hygiene issues.

The surface of our molar teeth have natural grooves, or fissures, and pits that can collect food and plaque. Sometimes these grooves can be so narrow and deep that it’s hard to completely clean with just brushing our teeth. When this happens, we increase the risk of developing tooth decay – particularly in children who haven’t fully cemented their good oral health hygiene habits.
Although fissure sealants are most commonly done on molar teeth, our dentists are specially trained to ensure that they can be placed on any tooth with a pit or a fissure. For example, lateral incisors, the teeth next to our big two front teeth, can have a deep groove that, if not sealed, can quickly decay.
Fissure sealants are an excellent way to prevent these deep cavities from forming in our teeth, prevent food from being trapped in our teeth and ensure our teeth are easier to clean by smoothing out the surface.
