10 Unusual Questions To Ask Your Dentist

Your question might seem weird to you, but it’s probably something your dentist hears all the time! At Maidstone Dental, we want you to feel comfortable asking any unusual questions that pop into your head. After all, they’re probably about oral health practices, toothaches, pains, or potential dental treatments. If you don’t ask your unusual questions, you might miss out on important information from our staff.

To help you along your journey, we’ve compilated an unusual list of questions that we recommend you ask your dentist:

1. Why should I have dental X-rays taken? And how often should I get them?

X-rays are important part of a comprehensive examination. There are many dental conditions that cannot be detected with a visual examination alone. It’s like having a regular blood test or PAP smears. Information from the X-rays help us identify problems to provide accurate treatment plans. In addition, X-rays help us monitor any change happening to your teeth and jaw bone between appointments. At Maidstone Dental, we recommend that adult patients have bitewing X-rays every 2 years and a full mouth x-ray (OPG ) every 3 years. For those with a higher risk for dental caries, we recommend doing it every six to 18 months.

2. Could my medication interfere with my dental treatments?

Many medications – including vitamins, minerals and herbal preparations – can effect your oral health and interfere with any medication and treatments that we provide . We recommend our patients share their medical history with us; including a list of all medications they use, to determine if any of these have an effect on your dental health. This will also allow us to tailor your treatment accordingly.

3. Do I need this treatment now, or can I wait?

At Maidstone Dental, we know dentistry can be expensive and that many patients may find it challenging to pay for treatments. When we suggest a treatment plan, we will let you know exactly how much it will cost and whether or not you need this treatment right now, or if there is another option to buy you some time to save money. We can also discuss a payment plan. Your oral health is our priority, we will always work with you to find a solution to prevent you from avoiding important treatments completely. Delaying necessary treatments now can lead to more severe diseases and expensive treatment in the future.

4. Would lifestyle changes help my teeth?

Many patients will ask their GP about lifestyle changes to improve overall health, however they will fail to ask us the same question. Believe it or not, lifestyle has a significant impact on your dental health, as your oral health is directly linked to your overall health. The healthier your mouth is, the healthier you will be as a whole. By determining the general health of your mouth and your current habits, including your oral care and diet, we can help you prevent future health problems.

5. What are my future dental risks?

Once we have a good picture of your overall oral health, we will determine potential issues and if you are likely to develop any future problems. We’ll provide you with a tailored treatment plan and appropriate advice on how to avoid future dental problems.

6. Are my dental problems hereditary?

Although poor lifestyle choices can cause many dental problems, some issues are hereditary. You may be more susceptible to gum diseases, tooth decay, misaligned teeth and other issues. Knowing about any genetic issues is essential for understanding the best course of action for yourself and your family.

7. Are there any important updates I need to share with my GP?

Due to the connection between your oral health and your overall wellbeing, health conditions (as well as side effects from prescribed medications) can often reveal themselves in your teeth, tongue and gums. Communicating oral complications and/or symptoms to your doctor can help detect and address specific health concerns accurately and efficiently.

Similarly, your medical history may impact our approach or your eligibility for certain procedures.

8. What is your continuing education policy?

The practices of dentistry and of customer service are constantly changing. At Maidstone Dental, our entire team, including our front desk staff, dental assistant and dentists, are encouraged to attend continuing education in their respective fields to keep up with the latest technologies and techniques and to constantly improve our customer service experience. If you have any questions regarding our team’s education, don’t hesitate to ask us on your next visit.

9. How do you keep up to date on the latest procedures and technology?

At Maidstone Dental, our dentists and therapists attend clinical and patient management courses regularly to keep up to date with the latest procedures and technology. We want to ensure our patients are receiving the best possible care.

10. What are your payment methods? Do you have any payment plans and policies?

We are aware that dental work can cost you hundreds of dollars. At times this can be expensive. Your first dental examination will be a comprehensive exam (x-rays are not included) and will cost $65. We will also discuss your dental goals and budget to tailor a treatment plan that best suits your situation. Moreover, we offer cash, credit card and bank transfer payments, as well as Zip Pay payment plans.

We pride ourselves on open communication and transparency, so you’ll know exactly what will be done during your treatment and how much it will cost. You can make an appointment online or call us on 9317 5636.
